Welcome to the Cognitive Ergonomics Laboratory!
The Cognitive Ergonomics Lab (CEL) investigates the relationship between human operators and the technology they use in dynamic environments like air traffic control, rail operations, healthcare, and driving. We are focusing on how people use strategies to manage these environments in the face of threats to achieving their goals. Strategies are used to keep performance high and workload low. In one study, expert critical care nurses are interviewed using a new structured interview procedure that focuses on strategy elicitation. In another, we are exploring how situation awareness is maintained in commercial rail operations. CEL scientists are looking at trust in automation, uncertainty in situation awareness, prospective memory, interruptions, visual search, and learning through analogies.
